Good Harbor, Good News. But…

Richard Clarke

This week TBNT got a jolt of great news. At Monday’s Searsport Planning Board meeting, TBNT and IIT Attorney Steve Hinchman announced that Good Harbor Consulting will be conducting a safety study on the LPG Tank and Terminal in Searsport. Good Harbor is headed by Richard Clarke, counter-terrorism expert and advisor to three U.S. Presidents. You may remember Clarke as the man who tried to get the attention of the highest levels of the administration in the Summer of 2001 to warn them something big was about to happen.  After 9/11, Clarke left the government and joined Good Harbor, an internationally recognized leader in all-hazards all-risks assessments. Steve asked the Planning Board for the cooperation of the town’s public safety agencies to work with Good Harbor. This report is being provided by our friends at the Islesboro Islands Trust and is expected within 60 days!

However, not everyone shares our enthusiasm.  One Planning Board member responded he had all the information he needed to make a decision — presumably to approve DCP Midstream’s tank— even ahead of a permit from the Maine Fuel Board. This was met with a collective audience groan.

The Maine Fuel Board now has DCP’s application for a permit and is expected to make a decision quickly. We need to have our concerns heard.

Action Needed:

Write to the Maine Fuel Board. Tell them where you live, that the DCP project is regional in scope, your concerns about safety and security and they should definitely consider the findings from the forthcoming Good Harbor report before granting a permit.

Thanks for staying active and involved.
